| Starting in 2008 and ending around 2012, TV services in the UK will go completely digital, TV region by TV region. This process is called digital switchover. It will involve switching over the current television broadcasting system to digital, as well as ensuring that people have adapted or upgraded their televisions and recording equipment to receive digital TV. |
Why is the switchover happening |
Fairer for all
So long as the old TV signal is running, around one in four UK households will not be able to receive all the available digital TV services through their aerial and one in five can't receive the channel Five. Government and the broadcasting industry want all UK households to benefit from the digital future and the additional channels and services it offers.
Digital TV is better TV
Digital viewers tend to be more satisfied with their television services and believe that digital TV is better TV. Through digital TV you will get all the channels and services you currently receive, plus many more as standard such as:

Some digital boxes have special access features such as subtitling, signing and audio description for those with hearing or sight problems. |

New services and technology
Digital switchover will enable the broadcasting industry to free up the airwaves to launch new services. This could include high definition television (HDTV) and video and TV clips through your mobile phone. |
